Tertiary companions to close spectroscopic binaries
Preliminary results of a survey of nearby solar-type spectroscopic binaries (SB) with 1 < P1 < 30 days for tertiary companions are presented. Observations with adaptive optics and data from the 2MASS sky survey permitted to discover new tertiary components and to sharpen statistical limits on their frequency. We find that 0.86 ± 0.07 SBs with P1 < 5 d have tertiaries, but this fraction drops to...
متن کاملSpectroscopic Analysis of Subluminous B Stars in Binaries with Compact Companions
The masses of compact objects like white dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes are fundamental to astrophysics, but very difficult to measure. We present the results of an analysis of subluminous B (sdB) stars in close binary systems with unseen compact companions to derive their masses and clarify their nature. Radial velocity curves were obtained from time resolved spectroscopy. The atmospher...
متن کاملSpectroscopic binaries with elliptical orbits
The radial velocity curves of many spectroscopic binaries (SBs) are perturbed by gas streams or proximity effects. For SBs with circular orbits, these perturbations can give rise to spurious orbital eccentricities of high statistical significance. But tests to identify such anomalous orbits can be constructed since perturbed velocity curves are in general no longer Keplerian. The derived tests ...
متن کاملPrecision radial velocities of double - lined spectroscopic binaries with an iodine absorption cell
A spectroscopic technique employing an iodine absorption cell (I 2) to superimpose a reference spectrum onto a stellar spectrum is currently the most widely adopted approach to obtain precision radial velocities of solar-type stars. It has been used to detect ∼80 extrasolar planets out of ∼130 known. Yet in its original version, it only allows us to measure precise radial velocities of single s...
متن کاملStellar Astrophysics with a Dispersed Fourier Transform Spectrograph. I. Instrument Description and Orbits of Single-lined Spectroscopic Binaries
We have designed and constructed a second-generation version of the Dispersed Fourier Transform Spectrograph, or dFTS. This instrument combines a spectral interferometer with a dispersive spectrograph to provide high-accuracy, high-resolution optical spectra of stellar targets. The new version, dFTS2, is based upon the design of our prototype, with several modifications to improve the system th...
